Lee Caldwell

Lee Caldwell completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Manitoba. She is a member of the Manitoba Association of Landscape Architects and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects. Lee has worked in the design field for over 20 years in the private, non-profit and public sectors. In her current position as the Senior Urban Designer for the City of Winnipeg’s Planning and Land Use Division, she administers the City's urban design review process for Downtown Winnipeg.

Ian Chodikoff OAA, MRAIC

Ian Chodikoff, OAA, MRAIC is an architect and current editor of Canadian Architect magazine. With a background in political science, he holds graduate degrees in architecture and urban design from the University of British Columbia and Harvard University respectively. He has undertaken projects ranging from the relationship between the natural and man-made influences of urban parks to the effects of social inclusion and community

diversity on urban design. His work has also included efforts to improve Toronto¹s Priority Neighbourhoods. On an international scale, Ian has conducted extensive research and field work exploring aspects of transnational migration and its effects on urbanization—specifically between Italy and Senegal. Having launched an exhibition entitled Fringe

Benefits: Cosmopolitan Dynamics of a Multicultural City in 2008, he is currently working on a book to serve as a follow-up to this exhibition which deals primarily with the effects of multiculturalism on that architecture and urban design of Toronto¹s constantly evolving suburban communities. In addition to teaching design studio, lecture courses and graduate seminars at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture Landscape and Design, he has

lectured in various universities and cities across North America and Europe. Ian has served on numerous design juries and has written in a variety of magazines and journals on issues ranging from planning and sustainability. Committed to the profession, he has served on various committees including the Toronto Society of Architects, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, as well as being a consultant with the Canada Council for the Arts on the subject of architectural competitions.

Gerald Fleming

Gerald Fleming has been a registered landscape architect in British Columbia since 1986 and he has worked primarily in the public sector. After graduating with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Guelph in 1976 he worked in Ontario, the Northwest Territories (Inuvik), and British Columbia. For the past 23 years, he has been involved in the planning, design and construction of many private and public projects with the District of Saanich on Vancouver Island. Over the years, he traveled to many destinations in Canada and Europe to observe and appreciate people and their special places. As the Manager of Park Planning & Design for the Saanich Parks & Recreation Department, he saw many positive environmental changes with a particular focus on native trees and plants, storm water management, strategic planning, trails and transportation, communication, and materials technology. Prior to becoming interested in the field of landscape architecture, he lived and worked in Edmonton, Alberta where he received a Bachelor of Commerce & Business Administration (1970), which has also been an asset on a wide range of ideas and issues.

Gordon Kraushaar

GORDON KRAUSHAAR is a registered architect and landscape architect, and is the principal and founder of Northland Design Studio in Moncton New Brunswick. His work ranges from conceptual design to project management and implementation, and focuses on attention to client interests. Previous to practicing on his own, he managed projects for the City of Moncton and the Province of Manitoba, and consulted with firms across Canada. Gordon has developed a core interest in sustainable development and the relationship between built and landscape forms.

Raquel Peñalosa

Raquel Peñalosa joined the team of Plani-Cité as Project Director in April 2008. She holds an undergraduate degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Montreal. Raquel Peñalosa has practiced for more than 20 years in the fields of planning, design and construction of landscape architecture and urban design projects, in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. She has been recognized for her leadership and capacity to bring new perspectives and innovative approaches to her work. Her international experience has given Raquel a distinctive practice that has ranged from large-scale urban projects to local public spaces, both within private and public spheres. She has developed a unique experience designing and implementing events that feature landscape architecture and garden design, putting forward the value of the green in today’s cities and urban life through a sustainable development approach. She has being invited to participate as a jury member in local and international events. She is also a member of several urban and citizen commissions as part of her contribution to the community.

John Quinn, BLA, O.A.L.A., C.S.L.A.

John Quinn has been practicing landscape architecture since 1981 and has been a principal in a number of partnership firms since 1987 before founding Quinn Design Associates Inc. in 2002. For over twelve years, John has worked internationally and headed major landscape architecture projects in Canada, China, Europe, the Caribbean, Russia and the Middle East.

Currently as a principal of Quinn Design Associates Inc., John is directing International landscape projects in Aqaba, Jordan; Cairo, Egypt; St. Petersburg, Russia and Venice, Italy.

John has developed a portfolio of work throughout Ontario related to Hospital and Health Care facilities, Hospitality and Hotel development, Main-Street Retail and Lifestyle projects as well as Office Commercial and Institutional work.

John holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and a Diploma in Horticulture and is a member of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architecture (O.A.L.A.) and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (C.S.L.A.) since 1984.

2009 Awards of Excellence Program Jurors

Ingrid Thiessen
Ingrid Thiessen has been practising landscape architecture in Saskatchewan since 1985; the last fourteen years as a private consultant in Regina. Her work in Regina has focussed on various projects for the University of Regina and the Regina Research Park. Ingrid has a master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Manitoba. Her present landscape interests include urban issues, native plants and exploring design principles. A four month sabbatical in Europe in 2007, reinforced the need to recommit her efforts on initiatives related to conservation and sustainability.


Kelty McKinnon
Bio: Kelty Miyoshi McKinnon is a senior landscape architect at Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg and an adjunct professor in UBC's School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. She is also a co-founder of Living lab. where she researches the points of intersection between social and ecological practices, and the potentials for engaging non-human agents in the production of landscape.

Gordon Kraushaar
Bio: Gordon has been with the Recreation and Parks department of the City of Moncton for two years, where he works as an Architect, Landscape Architect and Project Manager. His current work includes a diverse mix of building and recreation landscape projects, ranging from conceptual design to overall project management and implementation. Previously he worked as a consultant with several firms across Canada and for seven years as a Project Manager with the Province of Manitoba. Gordon is a registered architect and landscape architect. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Master of Architecture in 1988 and from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture in 1985. Through his work Gordon has developed a special interest in issues relating to the implementation of principles of sustainable development. He lives in Berry Mills NB with his wife, Carol, and their three dogs.

Currently as a principal of Quinn Design Associates Inc., John is directing landscape architecture projects in Aqaba, Jordan; Amman, Jordan; Cairo, Egypt; XemXija, Malta; and Brascov, Romania.
John has developed a portfolio of work in the Greater Toronto area and throughout Ontario related to Hospital and Health Care facilities, Hospitality and Hotel development, Main-Street Retail and Lifestyle projects as well as Office Commercial and Institutional work.

Nelda Rodger
Nelda Rodger is the founding editor of Azure magazine, an award-winning publication focused on leading-edge architecture and design. Since 1985, Azure has been covering local and international subjects from a broad range of design disciplines. Nelda has interviewed many designers and architects from Canada, the US and Europe, and has written on issues ranging from post-colonial garden design to avant-garde lighting. As editor, she directs and shapes the content of the magazine, initiates and maintains contact with design leaders, organizations, writers and photographers to produce a magazine featuring innovative and exciting international work alongside Canadian work of equal calibre. She has participated as a jury member for The Canada Council and for several design competitions.

2007 Awards Of Excellence Program Jurors

Gordon Smith (APALA) works for CBCL Limited, a multi-disciplinary firm with offices throughout Atlantic Canada. Gordon worked in Botswana for eight years, as manager and later, owner, of an environmental planning company. He has 20 years of consulting experience.

Dave Hutch (BCSLA) has spent thirteen years in municipal parks and environment departments on Vancouver’s North Shore. He also has diverse experience with federal and provincial agencies responsible in land management, conservation and enhancement.

Janet Rosenberg (OALA) is principal and founder of Janet Rosenberg + Associates. The firm has pushed the boundaries of landscape design for over 23 years, winning over 80 awards. Janet serves on numerous juries and task forces, and speaks at universities across Canada.

Bhavana Bonde (MALA) has worked in landscape architecture and urban design in India, Singapore and Canada, gaining in-depth knowledge about climate-specific design. She represents MALA on Winnipeg’s Urban Design Advisory Committee.

Juliette Patterson (AAPQ) has degrees in biology and architecture as well as a Master’s in landscape architecture, specializing in water management and treatment wetlands. She co-founded Catalyse Urbaine, which focuses on introducing natural processes into the city.

Peter Briggs (NWTALA) is owner of Corvus Design in Anchorage, Alaska. He is a northerner by birth and heart, but has previously practiced in Australia, Virginia and Colorado.
