LANDSCAPES | PAYSAGES

LANDSCAPES | PAYSAGES is the professional journal of landscape architecture in Canada. It presents a Canadian perspective on professional practice and provides a forum to discuss and debate matters related to design, culture and environment, as reflected in our landscapes. Recent issues have focused on topics that include restorative and therapeutic environments, regionalism and identity, and award-winning works of landscape architecture in Canada.

Call For Contributions
The editorial board of LANDSCAPES | PAYSAGES welcomes submissions related to the following themes:

  • Sustainable Planning & Design
  • Design for Play
  • International Work
  • Greenways/ Parks
  • Urban Design/ Planning
  • Residential Design
  • Iconic Spaces/ People

Articles, profiles or project summaries that address one of these theme areas are requested. Preference is given to work undertaken in Canada. Project summaries on built works in Canada are especially encouraged. Suggestions for book reviews are also welcome, as are Opinion pieces.

Articles for LANDSCAPES | PAYSAGES are not intended to be “reports” or academic “papers”. We are looking, above all, for tightly focused stories which expand our knowledge. Articles should be written in an inviting style, with colourful quotations and examples. Ideally, readers should feel the excitement generated by the project, the research, the point of view. It is not necessary to cover all aspects of a project, a piece of research, a trend, etc. Project articles should focus on one or two key aspects that set the project apart.

Please send a 250-word statement summarizing your proposed article and one or two sentences summarizing your background to the attention of the editor (judylord@sympatico.ca), LANDSCAPES | PAYSAGES.

Picturing Landscape Architecture

Picturing Landscape Architecture Landscape architect Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, born in Germany, has shaped Canadian cities with her parks and roof gardens like no other. Etta Gerdes, an emerging photographer of Germany’s younger generation, has photographed Oberlander’s landscape projects – in Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Yellowknife, and also in Berlin. Gerdes’ photos of Oberlander’s projects are touring Canada and Germany in an exhibit presented by the Goethe-Institut Montréal. The exhibit shows how Oberlander, who studied under Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius, integrates technical innovations with ecological and social sensitivities to create her iconic landscape designs. This exhibit catalog includes essays by the Canadian architecture critic Lisa Rochon, the German garden critic Cordula Hamann, and an interview with Oberlander herself. Ann Thomas, Curator of Photographs at the National Gallery of Canada, comments on the photos of Edda Gerdes in the context of German nature photography.

[file] Douglas Justice - Le Secret De La Biodiversité
